5-Inch vs. 6-Inch: Why "Acreage Grade" Matters

In the suburbs of Calgary, you’ll mostly see 5-inch eavestroughs. They work fine for a standard roof, but once you step out onto an acreage near De WintonPriddis, or Heritage Pointe, the game changes.

At Eavestrough Co., we often recommend moving up to a 6-inch seamless system. Here is why that extra inch makes a world of difference for your home.

1. Handling Large Roof Surface Areas

Acreage homes often feature sprawling rooflines, steep pitches, and large shops or outbuildings.

  •  The Math: A 6-inch eavestrough can carry nearly 50% more water than a 5-inch system.
  •  The Benefit: During a heavy Alberta downpour, a 5-inch gutter can quickly overflow, sending water cascading toward your foundation. A 6-inch system handles that volume with ease.

2. Debris and Maintenance

Out in the Foothills, we have more than just rain to deal with; we have wind-blown debris and needles from nearby trees.

  •  Less Clogging: The larger opening of a 6-inch gutter allows for larger downspouts (3x4 inches). This means small debris that would normally plug a 5-inch system can wash right through and out the bottom.
  •  Easier Cleaning: If you don't have a leaf guard system like Alu-Rex, the wider trough makes it much easier to get a scoop in there for seasonal maintenance.

3. Strength Against Snow and Ice

Snow doesn't just sit on a roof; it exerts massive downward pressure as it melts and refreezes.

  •  The "Acreage Grade" Build: Because 6-inch gutters are designed for higher volumes, they are often installed with heavier-duty brackets.
  •  Ice Dam Protection: In the winter, the extra capacity provides more "breathing room" for slush and ice to sit without immediately topping over the edge and creating dangerous icicles.

4. Aesthetics and Proportion

On a large home or a shop with a high fascia board, 5-inch gutters can look "skimpy" or out of scale.

  •  Curb Appeal: A 6-inch gutter provides a bolder, more finished look that complements the grander scale of rural architecture. It looks intentional and high-end, rather than like an afterthought.

Which One Is Right For You?

While 5-inch gutters are still a great, cost-effective choice for many Calgary homes, we believe the 6-inch "Acreage Grade" is the gold standard for rural properties and high-pitch roofs.
